Two cisterns can sit on near-identical pans and still take completely different spare parts, and the reason comes down to how the cistern connects to the toilet below it. Close-coupled and low-level designs are the two most common configurations found on UK jobs, and confusing the two when ordering spares is one of the easier mistakes to make on a busy round.

A low-level cistern, by contrast, is fixed to the wall a short distance above the pan and connects down to it through a visible flush pipe, usually around 32mm or 38mm depending on the specification. This changes several things at once: the flush valve or siphon outlet needs to accept that flush pipe rather than seal directly onto the pan, the fill valve can often be a longer-bodied type since there is more depth in the tank, and the lever or handle mechanism sits at a different height and angle relative to the flush arm.

Identifying which mechanism is fitted before ordering a spare avoids a wasted trip, since a flush valve will not fit where a siphon body was designed to sit and vice versa. A siphon uses the physics of siphoning rather than a simple valve seal to move water from the cistern into the pan. Lifting the lever raises a plastic or rubber diaphragm inside the siphon body, which pushes a slug of water up and over a bend in the siphon tube, starting a siphoning action that then draws the rest of the cistern's contents down through the tube by suction until the water level drops low enough to break the siphon and stop the flush. This is why older cisterns produce that distinctive extended flush sound rather than the quicker valve-open, valve-close action of a modern flush valve.

Once inside, the cistern behind a concealed frame is usually a compact, purpose-built tank rather than a standard visible cistern, and the fill valve and flush valve fitted to it are sized to fit that specific frame's depth and width. This is where sourcing spares gets harder than for a standard cistern: frame manufacturers often specify particular valve models to fit their tank dimensions, and a valve that works fine in a standard low-level cistern may simply not fit inside a concealed frame's tighter cavity.
